A Daily Devotional About how suffering can produce maturity Romans 5:3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. (NIV) Suffering can produce hope because people in suffering hope the suffering will end. However, the meaning of this verse is not related to hoping suffering will end. People who experience suffering either bite the bullet and persevere or they give up. There are only two options in regard to suffering. Option 1 is the bear up and persevere. Option 2 is to let the suffering crush you. When we are biting the bullet and persevering we are advancing and developing our character. A very mature person can patiently endure and hold off on what the person wants. From the development of true character comes true hope. A false character or weak character produces a hope based upon false ideas regardless of the intention of the person. But true character based upon truth and strength begets true, realistic, achievable goals producing true hope. |
