A Daily Devotional About looking ahead Luke 9:62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." What a hard saying and teaching we find in this verse. In a world where there is suffering and where consolation is needed, here is a verse about never looking back. We all want to look back at one time or another. We reminisce. We tell stories of yesterday. We document our past. We do genealogies. We remember and think about the "good old days." We grieve for people we have lost. We long to see people we have not seen for a long time. However, in this difficult verse we find inspiration, focus, progress, achievement, and even healing. We find these positive attributes in this verse because we cannot spend our time looking backward. If we only look backward, we will never see where we are going. If we only think about yesterday, we will not see the opportunities to minister to others today. If we constantly look at our past and do not look forward, we end up having no goal or target. We find inspiration because the opportunities for growth and service in Christ are ahead of us, not behind us. God made us to look in only one direction at a time. To make progress for God, we must look ahead, keeping in mind the lessons from the past. We find healing in these words because when we look forward to serving and dedicating our life to Christ each day, He miraculously reaches into our heart and heals us from yesterdays hurts. |
