A Daily Devotional

About multiplying your treasures

Haggai 2:8 The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the Lord Almighty. 9 `The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,' says the LORD Almighty. `And in this place I will grant peace,' declares the LORD Almighty." (NIV)

Money, power, wealth, fame, furniture, cars, houses, and landswe all want to be like the rich man who treasured his treasures. What we see in the rich man is a person who was possessed. The rich man did not own his treasures because the treasures of the rich man owned him. Remarkably, the rich man might have owned more treasures if he had been willing to give all he had to the poor and followed Jesus. The truth of our treasures owning us is not a new idea. Men and women have been caught up in greed and materialism since we fell from grace. In our current culture in the Western world, we are told we must have more and more and more stuff to be happy. Millions of people seek each day to multiply their money, their investments, their real estate, and their earthly treasures of all kinds. However, the focus of our efforts at multiplication should not be upon the material. The focus of our efforts should be upon the spiritual. When our heart and mind lives in the spiritual realm we continually give our spirit to Christ Jesus. All the material treasures we have fade away in the love and glory of Christ. If we let our heart be open to Christ's love, we understand all material things, even our material treasures, belong to Him. Under the touch of Christ, even a tiny fraction of what we have in the world is multiplied in our eyes.
