A Daily Devotional About truth and freedom John 8:31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (NIV) The truth may set you free but you may not always want to hear the truth. A lie will always keep you in bondage but sometimes people would rather be in the bondage of a lie than be free. Some people are afraid to be free. They are afraid of being free because with freedom must come a set of obligations and responsibilities resting upon them as a weight upon the shoulders of the free person. We may want the freedom but we too often do not want the responsibilities accompanying the freedom. For example, a person can become so accustomed to living in an institution where responsibilities are minimal they do not want to leave the institution, no matter how much freedom they might have on the outside. When we seek the truth, we must also prepare ourselves in prayer for the strength to handle the truth, with the consequences, and the responsibilities going with the truth. |
