A Daily Devotional 1 Thessalonians 4:11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. (NIV)About winning the respect of others (To treat others, including God, with respect means we are to treat them with admiration, approval, and with reverence. When we respect other persons or God, we are to esteem them and pay them homage.) Winning the respect of others is an activity done with intelligence, common sense, a quiet nature, and hard work. To gain someones respect we are to act and be the kind of person who others treat with admiration, approval, and reverence. Notice the apostle Paul connects a quiet, "mind your own business," hard working daily life with winning respect. When others do not respect us, very possibly we are not doing what is required to win respect. When others do not respect us, perhaps we need to do what Paul said to the Ephesians in 6:5. Perhaps we need to treat others with respect, with fear, with sincerity of heart, and do the will of God from our heart. |
