About becoming a child of God:

John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God� (NIV)

We are only given the right to become children of God. We do not automatically become His children. Believing in Christ's name is a start in the right direction to become a child of God. However, believing in Christ's name does not get us to the prize of having Him alive and living within our heart. To have Christ alive and living within us we must accept both the gift of salvation and the giver of this gift. We must accept both the gift of salvation and the giver into our heart. Only when we accept Christ into our heart do we become His child. When we become His child we want to give our all for Him and for His calling upon our life.
