A Daily Devotional
About the value of friendship..
"A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends, even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty." Job 6:14 (NIV)
There are many theologies about how you should live out your life. Most theologies deal with how you relate to God. Theologies, as a secondary matter, also deal with how you relate to others. God must surely cringe at what we do with His wonderful words of wisdom. In this verse from Job, Job was lamenting the fact people had deserted him when Job needed them the most. My wife received an email from a friend of hers and the subject line said "Friends Forever." The sender of the email has the right idea about friendship. Friends should be friends for life. Friendship should last through the good times and the bad times. Friendship should last through the darkness and pain as well as through the light and pain-free moments we all experience. In the English language, we put a word in front of the word "friendship" and the word is "lasting." The word "lasting" is appropriate because we don't think about friendship as temporary. When you and God survey your life and you look back at your life, what will you see? Will you see friendships enduring to the end? Will you see people who needed you in some dark hour? Will you then see your coming to them to be with them when they need you the most? For God, for Christ, and for the Holy Spirit, the important thing in your life is not just the ideas you hold in your head about them. For God, for Christ, and for the Holy Spirit the important thing is what you did and what you do as a result of these ideas. You have friends who need you and you need your friends. Friendship has a reward but friendship also has a cost. Being there in friendship when people truly need you is a cost. Many times your reward is a heavenly one. Being there for others is often not easy, not clean, and not pain-free. However, being there in friendship is worth it to God and to your soul over the span of eternity.
