When you fear a criminal will inflict pain upon you, then you instinctively know you must respect the criminal's power. In the Old Testament, the fear of God kept the children of God "in line," but even with dramatic demonstrations of power, the Israelites kept falling away. God wants you to regard Him as your Father in heaven upon whom you can depend and trust. He wants you to lean upon Him and trust Him when you are afraid of darkness and evil. This desire to have you trust Him inspired the words of Jesus cited above.
