Topic: An Early Christmas Trifle

Over 20 years ago, my eldest son was badly burned in a grain elevator explosion and fire that occurred in North Vancouver. He was 33 and had two children. His wife and I were the only visitors he was allowed during the first couple of months because the hospital had to be careful of infection. The staff in the burn unit were busy and overworked because 16 burn victims had been admitted from that fire. My daughter-in-law and I always made sure one of us would be there at meal- times to feed my son because his hands were so badly burned, he couldn't use them and we knew the staff appreciated the help. His very favourite dessert was (and it still is) the trifle I made every Christmas. He wasn't eating as much as we hoped and he seemed so thin. I decided to make him something I knew he would love, so I made my Christmas trifle and brought a good-sized bowlful to the hospital. After he had eaten what he could of his dinner, I said "I have a surprise for you," and put a spoonful of trifle in his mouth. His eyes lit up and he ate every last spoonful then smiled and whispered, "An early Merry Christmas, Mom."

Today my son and his wife have a good life. Although he has pins in all his fingers, he can do almost anything. He always keeps busy and seems happy. Some of the boys didn't make it, so we are thankful we still have ours. Merry Christmas to all, and especially to the doctors and staff of the burn unit at Vancouver General. They were magnificent. Thank you all.
