Be Knowledgeable

Always listen before you speak. Know what you want to say. Be knowledgeable about what you want to say. Be well-informed but do not be arrogant. A well-informed answer to a question or comment by another person often brings the other person into a more receptive frame of mind as you are speaking.

Select Descriptive Words

Help the other person to visualize what you are saying. Approach the other person with your information as if your information is in a comic book or the Sunday funnies, then describe the pictures. Communicate to the other person by carefully using “word pictures.” Use descriptive words or adjectives by painting a picture with words about the benefits of choosing your approach to solving a problem.

List Essential Benefits

Be explicit about how your approach can be of benefit to the other person or persons. Do not assume others know your topic or subject as you know it. Do not assume others know the benefits of taking a course of action you want them to take. Tell the other person about ALL the benefits. Leave no benefit out. Others may not take a course of action because they do not know ALL the benefits as you know them.
